yesterday nims & i went to see "a mighty wind," the new christopher guest movie. i would like to tell you that at the end, one of the characters comes out as a transwoman & apparently we are supposed to think it's hilarious or whatever. it's the last scene, the last "laugh." it was opening weekend so the theatre was sold out & i just slid down in my seat while the audience roared during the last few minutes. what the fuck?! people are an ass.

(even without that to ruin it for me, i didn't think the movie was very good. "best in show" was ten million times more clever. the only good part was catherine o'hara, who i swear is a fucking genius of subtlety. thus ends my review.)

also yesterday, while waiting for the bus, i got hit on by three pre-teen girls. yep. i got the flirty eyes & the sing-song "hiiiiiii." lawd.

today: goverment-issued identity documents can fuck off.

A friend of mine, just starting to pass as a guy after years as a socialist-feminist leather dyke, was at some truck stop on I5 down near Bakersfield. He put a buck in that machine with the mechanical claw that you try to get teddy bears and the like out of. He sucked; he got nothing.

Instantly, however, three teen-age girls come up all giggly and trying to get him to operate the machine for them, to get them a little stuffed duck, whatever. He's like, "What the fuck? Didn't they just watch me fuck up?" And, socialist-feminist that he is, he's all trying to empower them: "No, no, you can do this! It's no harder for you than it is for me!" They're simpering and trying to get him to put his hands on theirs as they move the controls. He's half loving the total passing, half freaking out at the secret ways straight women behave with men. And still sucking at getting the stuffed duck.

yeah, that's how i felt. i just heard about the film and got all excited, because i'm a ridiculous waiting for guffman fan, but reading that post made my stomach just sink.

myredself, i'm just taking the opportunity to tell you that you post lovely pictures. i tried to comment once, but you only accept friends-comments, which is understandable and everything. but i'm sneaking in over at this venue to tell you that you're supertalented and fabulous.

Yes, government-issued identity documents can fuck right off. I've got this total urge to get out of the US and travel, and at the same time a horror of having to deal with the Official Arbiters Of Identity to get a passport, fly in and out of the country, etc.

hey toby, this is abby. it is disappointing that christopher guest would stoop to such low levels to get a cheap laugh, but not that surprising, i guess. when i saw the previews for "a mighty wind," i thought it could be funny and sort of wanted to see it. but with every new review, my desire to see it decreases it. your description was the icing on the cake. or the straw that broke the camel's back. or whatever other metaphor works there.

the nyt review faulted the movie for its complete ignorance of the political dimensions of the 60s folk revival, and i was wondering if you noticed this while watching it. from what i can tell, the movie doesn't really deal with the connections between folk revivalists and the civil rights and anti-war movements (not to mention folk's earlier associations with labor activism in the 30's and 40's). maybe these omissions only bother nerdy amateur historians like me, i don't know. what did you think?

it's funny to hear about tweens hitting on you. you are quite the ladies' man, non? or is that mr. lady?
