i have the cutest friends in the world. no, for reals.

sitting in new york in the nicest dorm room in the world eating clementines, listening to heavenly, giggling with jen. reading up on info for the anti-war rally tomorrow. really glad to be here for it but feeling pretty nervous at the same time. and not because of code fucking orange, either.

leave a comment if you can tell me what the strategic point of doing action with the goal of getting arrested is. i've been thinking about this a lot.

I think deliberately courting arrest can have various goals. If you think the law you're being arrested under is vulnerable to a constitutional challenge on appeal, then getting arrested (followed by conviction at trial) is the only way to set the process in motion. If you think the public will be so outraged that they'll demand the law in question--even if constitutional--be amended or repealed, then that's the point. If you simply want to show that your convictions are strong enough to make you put up with arrest and jail (even if only until you make bail) then that's another reason. Or if you plan to offer a "nercessity" defense--that breaking the law was necessary in order to try to prevent a greater wrong--then, again, you have to get into court as a defendant in order to do that.
