on my walk to work this morning, i pass a man scraping snow off the sidewalk. "no school today?" he asks me. "no, i'm going to work," i reply. "oh," he says, surprised. "well, you look like a student, i always see you walking..." his voice trails off into embarrassment. i flash what i hope is an understanding smile & keep walking.

One of my favorite stories like that... chestertodd and I were in Boston, and stopped off at the wine store to pick up a nice bottle of wine to take to a dinner...we're talking maybe a $25-30 bottle of red wine. The salesperson looks at K and asks for ID. K hands over a NY driver's license (with DOB 1968) on it. The salesperson says, "This is from out of state. Do you have a student ID?" K says, "Dude, I gave you a corporate credit card. How many students that you know of buy $30 bottles of wine with corporate credit cards?"

i wish i had witty retorts for every time this happened but i usually feel bad for them 'cause they get so embarrassed. i know that i look twelve, esp if i'm passing, but geez, it gets to me.

(nimmy has told you about how people canNOT figure us out in public right? she's sure someone's gonna call child services on her one day. "that lady is kissing that little boy!")
