if you were going to make a queer punk/queercore primer mix for someone who was completely unfamiliar with the genre, what essential songs would need to go on it? i mean the songs you'd absolutely need to hear to get a sense of what queercore is about.

a lot of my problem is not knowing what song to use, but here's a list of bands so far:

team dresch (fagetarian & dyke? growing up in springfield?)
huggybear (herjazz?)
the third sex (definition? roy? love in the basement?)
los crudos
bikini kill (rebel girl? suck my left one?)
pansy division
spitboy (in tradition?)
s-k (a real man? call the doctor? joey ramone?)
fifth column
god is my co-pilot (i'm pretty sure i'm using queer disco anthem)
the need (rim me isabella?)
heavens to betsy (she's the one? or maybe i'm just partial to that song)
tribe 8
longstocking
behead the prophet nlsl

i was also thinking of that cwa song "only straight girls wear dresses." anyway, suggest songs for above bands or suggest songs by other bands. thanks.

what about excuse 17, "sevenwhateverteen"?
i would use either "she's the one" or "me and her"
also, i would use "freewheel" or "107"
also, i don't know how current you want to go, but there are a few more recent bands that i think would fit. like that band fagatron.

[identity profile] subjective.livejournal.com 2003-03-08 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
elliot had suggested fagatron to me. he suggested some other ones that i didn't know too, so they're not on this list 'cause i'm not sure i can find their stuff to put on the mix. but i have them written down at home & will keep looking.

sevenwhateverteen, TOTALS. how could i forget. hmm, i will think about freewheel. i was leaning towards growing up in springfield, mostly due to lyrical content.

get well so we can hang out soon!

[identity profile] externaltext.livejournal.com 2003-03-08 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
i know! being sick sucks! i am totally being bedridden today.

i forgot to say that i would put that xlimpwristx "i love hardcore boys" song on there, if you have it.

[identity profile] subjective.livejournal.com 2003-03-09 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
i just downloaded that the other night! i totally love it.
did you get well yet?

i had to get laura's permission to write this.

(Anonymous) 2003-03-19 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"I love hardcore boys! I love boys hardcore!" - limpwrist kick fucking ass. if y'all are down, try to download "just say go!" by the swarm. It's a cover of seminal NY 80s Queercore band GO! It's fucking amazing, if only for the final charismatic ending of "FAGS ROCK!". If you can't find it, lemme know I'll rip and send it to y'all.

hi.

i think you should definitely use rebel girl, herjazz, she's the one.. and maybe musical fanzine by team dresch? i just love that song, and i love the lines, "don't kill yourself cos people can't deal with your brilliance", and "don't let the monster stay under the bed."

i'm not sure which s-k song you should use.. the joey ramone one is definitely a classic.
and anything by pansy division.

this isn't a queercore band at all, but the white stripes do a cover of dolly parton's jolene which is just fantastic. the lead singer is a guy, and he's singing, "jolene, i'm begging of you please don't take my man." it's just really really great.

xo

[identity profile] subjective.livejournal.com 2003-03-09 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
i wish they would let you edit comments on lj, 'cause when i make typos i have to delete the whole thing & start over. anyway. i like the lyrics to musical fanzine, but not so much on the music. i feel that way about a few of the songs on that album actually.
anyway, thanks!

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2003-03-08 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
God is my co-pilot - "Handsome Molly" or "I hate girls"
Cypher in the Snow - "Militia"
Tribe 8 - "Power Boy"
and I'd do "Chicken Hawk" by CWA personally.

Are we talking only like 1990 on? or queercore's precursors too?

MDC - "What makes america so straight and me so bent?"
The Dicks - "Saturday night at the bookstore"
and
Inverted Triangle -"White Night Riot"

are pretty classic out-queer punk songs. I have no idea if the Inverted Triangle song is on CD, I kinda doubt it.

[identity profile] subjective.livejournal.com 2003-03-09 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
gordon, i knew you would be helpful! i don't have chickenhawk but maybe i can find it to download. i don't know what kind of timeline i'm looking for. i just want to give this person a good idea of what queercore is like 'cause they have no idea. actually they don't listen to punk at all but did express interest. we'll see.

in college once i did a class presentation on queer punk with a friend & we played the cwa song & people were scandalized. haha. also i handed out lyrics to queer disco anthem. <3 <3

Unfortunately I realize most of what I mentioned I only have on vinyl. I can make you a CD of some stuff if you want. Unfortuately, if you're on a time line, you better ask taryn about my timeliness with mailing packages. ;)

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2003-03-09 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
and I know L7 -"Fast and Frightening" must be on it.

". . .Popping wheelies on her motorbike / Straight girls wish they were dykes . . ."

[identity profile] subjective.livejournal.com 2003-03-10 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
who am i to turn down a mix cd? i could trade you a zine for it...
ps. do you have, or can you tell me how to get, sta-prest? i cannot find anything but one 7" on krs. i fear i am too late.

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2003-03-10 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
i will definitely send you a mix cd. I'd be happy to accept a zine in return. As for Sta-Prest, only one song exists on CD, I'll put that on the mix. it isn't their best though. That Kill Rock Stars 7" (Let's be friendly? right?)has their best recorded songs. All their stuff was supposed to be put out on CD by Heartcore but I heard flakiness happened.

To be honest, and don't tell 'em I said this, they were much better as an experience than a listen on the stereo.

[identity profile] theknife.livejournal.com 2003-03-13 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
i think "form fitting" by sta prest is one of the best songs i ever heard. you can tell them that.

sorry to intrude!

[identity profile] subjective.livejournal.com 2003-03-13 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
you're not intruding melanie! anyway i'm adding you so there. ;)

[identity profile] theknife.livejournal.com 2003-03-13 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
way to make my day. whoo!

[identity profile] gordonzola.livejournal.com 2003-03-15 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, "form fitting" is a good one. I told Iraya/Aloofa what you said while she was DJing the other night and she was all, "No way! That's so great. Tell her thanks." another reason for you to visit SF, you can meet Sta-Prest. and they've been talking reunion now that Feelings on a Grid broke up.

She said that the response in Germany for that single was huge for some reason and that it got really good reviews there. Huge in a relative sense, of course.

[identity profile] unclevampire.livejournal.com 2003-03-08 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
what is that song about Uncle Frank? - the one that says "she told me not to sleep with straight girls/she told me not to take pills" and "my mom says she really loves but it's not yes, yes, yes she does/because she doesn't treat me like you treat some one you love". That is a swell song.

[identity profile] brodycoyote.livejournal.com 2003-03-08 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
uncle phranc- Team Dresch

it's a good song

This is long...

[identity profile] brodycoyote.livejournal.com 2003-03-08 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] on-reserve.livejournal.com 2003-03-08 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
hey ...

i've never heard any of this genre of music either. would it be too much to ask for a copy when you're done? i'll cover with blank cd's or tapes or whatever.

:) amy

[identity profile] subjective.livejournal.com 2003-03-09 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
hey amy, sure thing. it'll probably be on cd now that i have the ability to burn them. i'll keep you posted.

Re:

[identity profile] on-reserve.livejournal.com 2003-03-09 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
yay! it's weird 'cause everyone thinks i went through riot grrl or queer punk music and i think it's more of a guilt-by-association thing (since most of my friends have). i was never cool enough to be piped into that stuff. my teenage years were all about michael jackson and hair metal :) so it'd be nice to get a "greatest hits" of what everyone's talking about.

[identity profile] bobby-kendall.livejournal.com 2003-03-08 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
definitely "asskickatron" by fagatron, it's so so good. i second godco "i hate my friends" or better yet "my bicycle gang" or "certain snails" ("when 2 x-zygotes get 2gether / the result is always female" = hilarious). also what about, like, the gossip "swing low"? or is that not queercore, but just, like, gay? if you're want super gay-ass music that is not punk rock, i highly recommend of montreal ("my favorite boxer," "when a man is in love with a man") and that field mice song "this love is not wrong."
post the tracklist when it's done.
xoxo amalle

p.s. the chicago women's liberation rock band.

[identity profile] subjective.livejournal.com 2003-03-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't know fagatron but god, people keep talking about them. i'm looking for mp3s or something.

i might put some plain ol' gay music on but it depends on how much room i have. if so i also want to add something by stephin merritt, & phranc's bulldagger swagger. heh. i'll post a tracklist, yes.
