if you were going to make a queer punk/queercore primer mix for someone who was completely unfamiliar with the genre, what essential songs would need to go on it? i mean the songs you'd absolutely need to hear to get a sense of what queercore is about.

a lot of my problem is not knowing what song to use, but here's a list of bands so far:

team dresch (fagetarian & dyke? growing up in springfield?)
huggybear (herjazz?)
the third sex (definition? roy? love in the basement?)
los crudos
bikini kill (rebel girl? suck my left one?)
pansy division
spitboy (in tradition?)
s-k (a real man? call the doctor? joey ramone?)
fifth column
god is my co-pilot (i'm pretty sure i'm using queer disco anthem)
the need (rim me isabella?)
heavens to betsy (she's the one? or maybe i'm just partial to that song)
tribe 8
longstocking
behead the prophet nlsl

i was also thinking of that cwa song "only straight girls wear dresses." anyway, suggest songs for above bands or suggest songs by other bands. thanks.

God is my co-pilot - "Handsome Molly" or "I hate girls"
Cypher in the Snow - "Militia"
Tribe 8 - "Power Boy"
and I'd do "Chicken Hawk" by CWA personally.

Are we talking only like 1990 on? or queercore's precursors too?

MDC - "What makes america so straight and me so bent?"
The Dicks - "Saturday night at the bookstore"
and
Inverted Triangle -"White Night Riot"

are pretty classic out-queer punk songs. I have no idea if the Inverted Triangle song is on CD, I kinda doubt it.

gordon, i knew you would be helpful! i don't have chickenhawk but maybe i can find it to download. i don't know what kind of timeline i'm looking for. i just want to give this person a good idea of what queercore is like 'cause they have no idea. actually they don't listen to punk at all but did express interest. we'll see.

in college once i did a class presentation on queer punk with a friend & we played the cwa song & people were scandalized. haha. also i handed out lyrics to queer disco anthem. <3 <3

Unfortunately I realize most of what I mentioned I only have on vinyl. I can make you a CD of some stuff if you want. Unfortuately, if you're on a time line, you better ask taryn about my timeliness with mailing packages. ;)

i will definitely send you a mix cd. I'd be happy to accept a zine in return. As for Sta-Prest, only one song exists on CD, I'll put that on the mix. it isn't their best though. That Kill Rock Stars 7" (Let's be friendly? right?)has their best recorded songs. All their stuff was supposed to be put out on CD by Heartcore but I heard flakiness happened.

To be honest, and don't tell 'em I said this, they were much better as an experience than a listen on the stereo.

Yeah, "form fitting" is a good one. I told Iraya/Aloofa what you said while she was DJing the other night and she was all, "No way! That's so great. Tell her thanks." another reason for you to visit SF, you can meet Sta-Prest. and they've been talking reunion now that Feelings on a Grid broke up.

She said that the response in Germany for that single was huge for some reason and that it got really good reviews there. Huge in a relative sense, of course.
