see this article? as part of the massive funding cuts to health education, the entire safe schools program for glbt youth was scrapped as well. to my knowledge, this was the only program of its kind for public schools, with government funding. fuck you, massachusetts legislators.

ps. here's a more complete article i just found.

jacksonville has a safe schools coalition trying to get a program VERY similar to that implemented in the schools. representatives from cities all over florida met in the capitol last february to lobby for the "dignity for all students act." one senator that we talked to was so unreceptive to our presence. one mother with us told him that her daughter had been pushed down the stairs at school because kids thought she was a lesbian, and his response was (drum roll please): "you should put her in private school." WTF? my gf told him how she used to carry a gun to school because she was so afraid of anti-gay violence against her, and he merely said, "well, carrying a gun to school isn't a good thing either, young lady!" and totally dismissed her experiences. his platform was basically "teasing happens in school, kids just need to deal with it. kids will be kids! i got teased for having glasses, and i turned out just fine!"

but of course, all of his children are in private schools. that's not a red flag or anything, hm? legislators are so out of touch with reality that it is truly scary. even the men (all men!) on the "education committee" didn't know what the difference between part time and full time students was.
