hey, people with digital cameras or who know about them, help me out please. what should i be looking for when i shop for one of these things? any recommendations as to brands, etc?

Hey! I just finished a digital camera hunt of my own and was most impressed both technologically and budgetarily with Olympus - I like that my camera has the elusive black-and-white setting as well as sepia, and also features a setting solely for taking head self-portraits. Remember: don't accept anything less than 5 megapixels, and make sure you can turn off the digital zoom. It's a good idea to check out what kind of memory it uses (CDs, floppy disks, memory cards or sticks) and compare their prices and megabyte capacities. A tripod mount (some, bizarrely, are manufactured without) and a hot shoe (where the flash attaches) are some other features that you may enjoy. Make sure you ask lots of questions about your computer/software compatibility. If you plan on travelling out of the US with it, you may want to avoid rechargeable batteries, as they can be difficult to charge at other voltages or less reliable electricity systems.
