day one the first day.
Sep. 2nd, 2003 11:49 ami'm glad i've lived in small agricultural areas & college towns before. otherwise this would all be a terrible culture shock. i want to get started on the new life, but it's a holiday & there is nothing to do-- i can't open my bank account, get my new drivers license, buy a bike, get a pobox. i walked to the co-op & bought cleaning supplies & shampoo & some fruit. whenever i am feeling sad or fed up with this town, i plan to go to the co-op.
i know i'll feel better when my items arrive & i can stop sleeping on the floor & cook real food in my own kitchen again. i need to figure out how to transport & move furniture. frieda keeps hogging the single chair in the apartment.
i checked my mailbox & had no mail yet. i don't know how to set up my voicemail. i can't go to the city today really, because i have to be back tomorrow morning to meet with the landlord. i feel restless.

Date: 2003-09-01 04:58 pm (UTC)re: what laura asked about the stereo.. when i moved into my first apartment in boston, it was the summer before my second year. the lease started on my birthday, so i went up for a couple of days to finalize all the stuff and get the keys, even though my roommate wouldn't be in town for a couple of weeks. i brought this huge suitcase full of a few things that seemed especially important to bring for a few days in the new, unfurnished apartment: some clothes, my old portable record player, and a small stack of records. i was lucky because we were inheriting a futon from a friend, so i didn't even have to sit on the floor while i sat in the otherwise empty apartment and listened to music.
i have conveniently forgotten how annoying it was lugging that heavy suitcase from the bus station to the realtors to the apartment.

Date: 2003-09-01 05:20 pm (UTC)ps. how did you deal with getting furniture into your new place? i don't know anyone here yet & don't have a vehicle. i can't really furnish an apartment with only things i can physically carry by myself!

Date: 2003-09-01 07:07 pm (UTC)I had thought about renting a truck for a few hours or buying furniture at a place that delivers. It's tricky though. I know where I used to live the Salvation Army had a guy who did a sort of freelance furniture delievery thing for them.
Maybe you should just ask everyone you meet, right off, if they ahve a truck, and if they say no, put no further effort into getting to know them - simply move on until you get what you need!

Date: 2003-09-03 09:28 pm (UTC)hooray! you are out on the west coast which means now we live in the same time zone again and are not impossibly far distances apart. and we can even visit each other perhaps, when i have a bit more cash and you have some spare time. i'd love to show you the sights of seattle someday soon.
oh, and have you emailed your new phone/address to people yet? because i am planning on writing you a big fat long letter now that bumbershoot is over and i have my life back again.
take care and welcome again to the west!
loving you,
abby
