i'm glad i've lived in small agricultural areas & college towns before. otherwise this would all be a terrible culture shock. i want to get started on the new life, but it's a holiday & there is nothing to do-- i can't open my bank account, get my new drivers license, buy a bike, get a pobox. i walked to the co-op & bought cleaning supplies & shampoo & some fruit. whenever i am feeling sad or fed up with this town, i plan to go to the co-op.

i know i'll feel better when my items arrive & i can stop sleeping on the floor & cook real food in my own kitchen again. i need to figure out how to transport & move furniture. frieda keeps hogging the single chair in the apartment.

i checked my mailbox & had no mail yet. i don't know how to set up my voicemail. i can't go to the city today really, because i have to be back tomorrow morning to meet with the landlord. i feel restless.

Sleeping on the floor is totally bad for your morale. Buying my futon mattress four days after I moved out here was the best thing that ever happened to me.

my mattress is supposed to arrive on wednesday with the rest of my stuff. tomorrow night i hope to be crashing at nimmy's in oakland. i don't understand why sleeping on the floor is said to be good for one's back. ugh.

ps. how did you deal with getting furniture into your new place? i don't know anyone here yet & don't have a vehicle. i can't really furnish an apartment with only things i can physically carry by myself!

I basically amin the same situation, except I have a car, it's just really, really small, so much that anything I could fit in it is also probably something I could just as easily carry (in most cases). I went with the small-stuff option, but consequently, I only have a somewhat uncomfortable yardsale chair and no couch and two folding tables.

I had thought about renting a truck for a few hours or buying furniture at a place that delivers. It's tricky though. I know where I used to live the Salvation Army had a guy who did a sort of freelance furniture delievery thing for them.

Maybe you should just ask everyone you meet, right off, if they ahve a truck, and if they say no, put no further effort into getting to know them - simply move on until you get what you need!
